ClownVPN is what happens when a small team of engineers gets sick of "free" VPN apps that cap you at 500MB, log everything, and then ask for your credit card on day 8.
Walk into the Google Play "VPN" category. You'll see hundreds of apps. Most of them belong to one of three buckets:
Free for 7 days. Then $12.99/month auto-billed. Users forget. Cards get charged. Reviews complain.
"Free" but the app phones home with your DNS queries, your sites, your everything. The product IS you.
500MB a month. Three slow servers. No kill switch. No split tunneling. Designed to make paid look reasonable.
We wanted a fourth option: a free VPN that actually works, doesn't track you, doesn't ask for a card, and treats the free tier as the product instead of the trap.
One revenue stream: ads inside the app. No paid tier. No "premium servers". No upsell email cascade. The full feature set is in the free app because there's nothing else to sell.
"No logs" is easy to claim and hard to verify. So we built the server stack to make logging actively difficult: WireGuard with logging disabled at config level, RAM-disk infra, no DNS service of our own. The data isn't there to leak.
The marketing is unhinged on purpose. The actual app is just a big circle and a server picker. WireGuard underneath. Kill switch by default. The clown is the wrapper — the engineering is the product.
Small. Senior. Distributed. Backgrounds in networking, cryptography, and consumer apps that didn't suck. We keep names off the website because we'd rather the product speak for itself, and because some of us still write code for other projects under our real names.
That's not a dodge — see /contact/ for direct email lines to every function (engineering, support, security, privacy, legal). Real humans, fast responses.
| Thing other VPNs do | Our position |
|---|---|
| Sell user data | Never. No revenue model that depends on it. |
| Bundle browser hijackers / "system optimizers" | Never. The app does one thing. |
| Auto-renew "free trial" into paid sub | No paid tier exists. |
| Cap free users to coerce upgrades | No caps. No coercion. Same features for everyone. |
| Track users across the web | Not on the website. Not in the app. |
| Take VC money that demands aggressive growth tactics | Bootstrapped + ad revenue. That's it. |
Try the app. If you've used a "free" VPN before, the difference is obvious within 30 seconds.
